It takes a lot of 'play' with the tiles, and you will probably end up layering a lot of the floor tiles to get them (semi) even. I was able to get a great setup in an area called Altor, between Gorka and Old Fields. It's a single house with outbuilding.

I placed a stairs to start and built on top of the house.  My suggestion is take your time placing the tiles, have an idea what you want to build, be sneaky around the zombies!!! and above all have patience.  

My only problem was I completed my hideout, saved it, went to visit my sister, came back and reloaded the save and  the entire Addons directory was  "save cannot be loaded because downloadable content has been deleted". And I hadn't changed ANYTHING, no additions no subtractions, saved and closed the game.
So, yeah I spent a good many hours  placing only to lose the save, but I have a far better idea on how to place the tiles now.  

And remember, save the last bullet for yourself!
