Amazing news about the beta patch thing! That would explain why some people were having issues while others didn't!
About the red icon thing : just ask a situation report; select your unit and press 5 twice.
I'm sure there's a function that does that automatically (like when a unit is healed by a medic), but I have yet to find it...
On a general note, I would advise to anyone being new to Arma to take some time and read tutorials explaining how to manage a squad. Arma being a military situation, it's not always intuitive! ;)

And I'll check out the recruit/dismiss system!
